Arthur was born in 1921 to Marsh and Millicent née Rosenberg and had an older brother Lionel and younger sister Stella. Their father died when they were young. In 1939, the family were living at Well Street, Hackney and their mother Millicent was a gown shop proprietor. Stella was the shop sales woman and Lionel worked as a tailors assistant manager.

Arthur was the navigator on Lancaster LM260 which departed RAF East Kirkby on a night operation to Würzburg. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at Moos, 11km south of Würzburg killing all the crew.
